K. Rowling interview on Oprah

I really enjoyed the Oprah interview with J. K. Rowling on Friday. I thought that it was really well done and that Oprah connected with her on a level that I don't usually see in her interviews.

I also thought that JKR seemed much more comfortable, laid back, and sure of herself. It was nice to see. In the past, she has been so cautious (sometimes catty) about things. I think that having distance from the writing of the series has helped her talk about it in a better, deeper, and more honest way. It was refreshing to see.

OF COURSE...we did not get any Snape content. Clearly, Oprah isn't a Snape fan...otherwise, she would not have been able to stop herself. :)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://susiesnape.blogspot.com/2010/10/new-j-k-rowling-interview-on-oprah.html' title='New J. I am a bit disappointed that he didn't sing over Draco when healing him from the curse. I was really looking forward to that bit. Rowling is so careful in her description and instead it turns into a chant kind of thing.

I also miss the scenes of Snape as Professor of the Dark Arts. I mean, geez. The other films constantly reference the fact that Snape wants that job; and, when he finally has it, they don't ever go back to it!

The Unbreakable Vow: better than I thought it would be, but Narcissa wasnt' nearly desperate enough. She should be on her knees, begging. I am pleased to see the trace of tears, but the element of begging, as it was represented by Rowling, is missing...and that is vital to understanding Snape's power as a character.

And what happened to the ambiguous ending that kept *some* readers guessing? That isn't even an issue in this film. In fact, Harry, when he says, "It was always Snape," just sounds like an idiot...again.

So, in general, I have an unfavorable view of this film. It amazes me that people loved it so much. The novel was dark and sophisticated...my favorite in the series after The Goblet of Fire...and it is like the director decided to dumb it down for the audience. In fact, though this is off subject but relative in many ways...it is like an overwhelming response to this season of Weeds. Esteban, a very Snape like character, brings a new element of darkness and complexity to the show. Many viewers are unhappy with the plotline, saying that the show has lost its humor. Well, when you get as deep as Nancy has gotten into the drug business, things only go downhill. However, that being said, Esteban as a character forces issues into Nancy's life that would never appear otherwise. He allows for growth and expansion of meaning. There isn't any light at the end of a drug cartel tunnel to Mexico (as much as I dream of Demian Bichir). SO-- this also relates to Snape. Snape SHOULD force Harry to realize other parts of his personality and other sides of his life. Snape SHOULD (and DOES, in the novels) act as a catalyst for the reader to reach new depths. The only comfort is that Harry, in this movie adaptation of book 6, proves that he is completely inept...and, also, that he is only there as Dumbledore's plaything.

"IT'S OVER...."

I LOVE the new HP and the Half-Blood Prince trailer!!!

http://mugglenet.com/app/news/full_story/2316

Does Severitus ever go away?

I hope not!

I have noticed some high quality fan-fics since my last post; however, and I think this has to do with the lack of HP hype, updates are still few and far between. That being said, I am impressed with quite a few of the fics (and the momentum of older fics that have been continued).

Often, I toy with the idea of writing my own fanfic piece, but I just can't inhabit the world well enough (even though I have often imagined great stories in my head!). I just feel more comfortable writing about my own worlds and characters. (JKR's world is just so big and complex already and I am timid about stepping into all of that!) So, I am really happy that other people take the plunge into fan fiction and do such a great job! I am not that bold!

Also, of course, I am still really enjoying Snapecast's newest episode (#31), though I have to say that I wish the older episodes were still available on iTunes. I just bought a new computer and would like fresh downloads of the old episodes...

Anyway, other than that, my daily Snaping consists of trying to find the "Snapes" in other literary characters...it is one of the ideas that makes getting through my PhD comps list bearable! Making myself look at things from a distance has led to a thought. I think, for the most part, in books 1-3 Snape is just callous and cruel. In book three he gains a bit more depth, but it isn't until book 4 (at the very end, I think, when Dumbledore sends him off) that his character deepens to the point that he really starts to take over my interest. I wish Rowling would speak about this some more...when did she decide to delve into his character? Why does she continue to deny that he is worthy of admiration? She continues to hate him, but clearly something is up.
<img width='1' height='1' It was fantastic! I wish I could have been there, but I could only afford one conference! Still, I am planning on going to some in the coming years! So, anyway, one discussion on the podcast had to do with Snape substitutes. OF course, no one replaces Snape. However, if you are looking for Snapey goodness in other characters, I suggest not only the options the Snapecasters mentioned but also: James Spader (movies or Boston Legal...simply for the Snark)...and Gordon Ramsay. Both have Snark appeal, though Ramsay is a bit much at times! The Twilight series was mentioned...and I even promote it as an option at the end of this page...but, after reading the last installment, I can't recommend Edward as a good option. Edward Cullen lost all appeal for me in the final book. He simply wasn't the same person anymore. Well, all of that being said, I still recommend going to the source for a Snape fix. (HP4 is on t.v. tonight...)

Crazy Comments

"Will moviegoers still be wild about Harry? "I'm not going to lie to you," says Oscar-nominated screenwriter Steve Kloves, returning to his role as official franchise scribe after taking the fifth film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, off. "I do have some concern that because the books are over, the anticipation for the movies won't be the same." Yes, the films have surged in popularity since Alfonso Cuarón's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban set them on an edgier course. And yes, there are those who follow the saga only through the movies — which is why we'll refrain from discussing Prince's monumental 90-hanky death. Yet even within the top ranks of a moviemaking operation as bloody well run as Harry Potter, there is, well, mild freaking out. Kloves allows himself an improbable thought, then laughs. "It would be a complete car crash if no one showed up."
Source:http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20218889,00.html?iid=top25-20080816-'Harry+Potter'%3A+On+the+'Half-Blood'+set.

Mr. Movie Guy, let me assure you we are just as excited now...if not more so...than we ever have been. The photo shows Snape and Narcissa making the unbreakable vow. Snape/Rickman looks fine. However, Narcissa looks too confident and steady. When I read the scene, I always saw it as one of intense desperation. Narcissa has basically lost it and is not confident at all. Even Bellatrix looks a bit unresponsive. Anyway, I hope it is just a bad promotional still shot. If not...well, because WB just HAD to move the release to July, they should really go back and fix that. Snape fans are desperate to see that scene played out just right. And, even if you aren't a Snape fan, it will be hard to buy Narcissa's panic as she runs through the castle in the last book/film, if this scene isn't handled perfectly. The fact is that this is the most adult scene in the entire series and it is key.

WB...you are killing me.

HP 6 DELAYED....UGH!!!! I can't wait!!!!

So, recently, I have been rereading a lot of fan fiction. I am also exploring fan fiction Web sites, some of which have an inconvenient interface. For example, I try to save favorite stories on certain sites, and they don't save!!! Never a good thing.

Also, I am still rereading the series. Just finished Order of the Phoenix. It was better this time around for some reason. I think it is because I really got into the Occlumency chapter. However, does anyone have a theory as to why Snape traces his lips with his fingers when he is in deep thought? It was a detail that just seemed more intriguing this time around. Harry still annoys the hell out of me in this book, but I think Snape restrains himself quite well, considering!
<img width='1' height='1' I am sure all of you know this already, but in the beginning of Book 5, just before Aunt Petunia gets the howler, she mentions she found out about Azkaban from Lily and that "awful boy"...of course, now we know that "awful boy" was not James...it was Snape. I love rereading the books now that I know the ending. I was skeptical at first, but it really is a good experience. Snaping has a whole new dimension.

And...

I LOVE SNAPECAST!!!! We came to the conclusion that a huge part of it depends on his minimalistic attitude. Who else could make single word replies sound so good? In particular, we admired not only his classroom persona, but also his encounter with Narcissa at Spinner's End. I know that he "spins" Bellatrix a story about his motives/past/present; however, his real concern in that scene seems to be Narcissa. His control depends upon minimalism, and this is seen in areas of his life that are important to him. He answers Bellatrix to placate her. However, with Narcissa, and others he considers important, he adopts the "minimalist" approach when it comes to conversation. The true power of Snape resides in his silence. The silence is not so much one of stoicism but, rather, one of planned control that indicates not hunger for power but validation of his ethical character.

Kelly and I both agreed that living in a culture that values excess so much makes us appreciate Snape more!

New Post to Leaky Cauldron about Snape:

Here is an excerpt from JKR's commentary at the James Joyce Awards:

"...Of interest are her comments regarding the plot lines and several of the characters. The Harry Potter author said some of the less crucial story lines were not always planned right from the begining and evolved as she went along, “But the big ones, the Dumbledore storyline, the Snape storyline were always there because you — the series is built around those.” Further comments on the importance of Snape and Dumbledore came from a question about the development of their story lines. Jo said:

“with Dumbledore quite deliberately, you find out little about Dumbledore’s own private life because his interactions with Harry are always about Harry, which sets up the fact that in the seventh book Harry thinks “but why did I never ask ?” He’s gone now and he’s never even thought of saying : “so how about you ?” you know, at the end of one of those conversations which I think is something that happens after the grief, the regret that he didn’t ask. And I think also that Dumbledore had always been such an almost god-like figure to Harry in some ways, that he felt he couldn’t ask him personal questions.

Snape, on the other hand, I had to drop clues all the way through because as you know in the seventh book when you have the revelation scene where everything shifts and you realize why Snape was… what Snape’s motivation was. I had to plot that through the books because at the point where you see what was really going on, it would have been an absolute cheat on the reader at that point just to show a bunch of stuff you’ve never seen before, you know… “Oh by the way, in the background this was happening.” So I did know. It was a complicated plotting process but by the time Philosopher’s Stone was finished, I definitely knew all the big things about Snape and Dumbledore because in many ways they’re the two most important characters in the seventh book… Well, other than the trio, Harry, Ron and Hermione."

For the entire article: http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/2008/4/3/jkr-snape-and-dumbledore-two-of-the-most-important-characters-in-deathly-hallows.

I finally feel a little bit better about her attention to Snape and her intentions in developing his character.

A new twist on the fan vid...

Okay. First of all, overlook the song. I am not a Spears fan and at first I resisted watching this video because of the choice ("Everytime"). Some of the words fit, but I would rather hear something that reflects a, um, deeper intellectual emotional experience. However, I LOVE the concept and the interaction created between author and character in this one. The edits are nice and capture the author/character/fan experience in a way that I can really understand. This is it:

"Perhaps Harry had eaten a bit too much, because he had a very strange dream. He was wearing Professor Quirrell's turban, which kept talking to him, telling him he must transfer to Slytherin at once, because it was his destiny. Harry told the turban he didn't want to be in Slytherin; it got heavier and heavier; he tried to pull it off but it tightened painfully—and there was Malfoy, laughing at him as he struggled with it—then Malfoy turned into the hook-nosed teacher, Snape, whose laugh became high and cold—there was a burst of green light and Harry woke, sweating and shaking" (130).

This passage not only tells us what we eventually find out about Voldemort's connection with Harry but it also tells us in advance how the series ends. The images seem muddled in this paragraph (think about how things turn out...these images are confused versions of actuality), but it is the exact foreshadowing of the end of book 7.

Accio...Here I Come!

Yea! So, I know that this fic began long ago (March 05), but I never really kept up with it. However, I have been reading it now and I LOVE it. The characters have depth and remain just enough true to canon. I especially love Hermione stealing Snape's teaching robes to use in mock instruction with Neville. I think this action would really appeal to Hermione (even if you took out the romance stuff) because she does respect Snape and knowledge, idolizing them in a weird combination of one another. So, the idea that she literally tries to slip into his skin/persona goes along with a crucial stage in developing one's own persona: emulating that which we admire. Anyway, I highly recommend this fic that is still in the update/non-finished status on fanfiction.net.

A little off topic...A Missed Snape Moment?

I had an experience today that really almost made me channel my inner Snape. So, before my second class of the day began, I ran over to the library to grab a cup of coffee. On my way back to the classroom, I noticed one of my students talking to a friend, complaining about the writing assignments I give in the class. (Now, keep in mind, I allow these writings to be turned in on days of their choice as long as they meet the required number. Basically, it is an easy 100 points and keeps them from taking quizes...how much more generous can you get?) Anyway, the student finally realized I was standing behind him/her (identity protected) and tried to cover up the situation (yeah...he/she just made it worse for himself/herself). However, the entire time, I thought, "Wow...what would Snape do?" Of course, I know exactly what he would do and it made me laugh inside. Still, I avoided the temptation to channel the potions master...probably better for everyone (I just get frustrated when I offer something that is a generous assignment and they complain)...nor do I have a "Rickman" voice to carry it off. Still, it made the moment worthy of experiencing it. I could have used a wand and loud, banging shutters slamming behind me as I entered the room. Ah...the magic.

Aged to Perfection...Even in Death.

Happy Birthday, Severus Snape.

(Don't worry...no foolish wand-waving tonight.)

Tomorrow...

THE LAST REGULARLY SCHEDULED EPISODE OF SNAPECAST!!!
A mixture of dread and excitement never felt so good.

Holiday Hell Update

So, I know I haven't posted anything in a while...I apologize. I have been much busier than I anticipated during this holiday season and I am trying to decide whether or not to submit my paper idea to the Accio Conference. The problem: the papers are due to the conference (so that they can be printed up) by May 16...right in the middle of finals and end of semester drama. So, anyway, I am still thinking of Snape. I have placed a couple of additions on this page. First, below, is a great bottle of beer actually produced (I believe) in Oxford. It is too perfect for Snape. Also, at the bottom of the page, I am adding books that appeal to those of us who have enjoyed the HP series and, specifically, the potions master's character. I will add to this list as time goes on! However, I have decided to look at a few fanfics and discuss them here. The first one I will look at is:

Vain Wisdom All and False Philosophy (by Lissa1011). Rating: M (Mature...dont' look at it if you don't like that kind of thing).

This is a great fic and can be found on Ashwinder and on fanfiction.net.

So, once everything calms down, I am going back to re-read every chapter from this fic, starting from the beginning. Then, I hope to come up with something interesting to say...although, my brain may not be working so well by then! Anyway, suffice it to say that I find this to be a great fic and look forward to talking about it some more.

Snape as Head of House and Other Musings About Slytherins

I have always found Snape fascinating. It feels ridiculous to state the obvious, but there it is. However, the book that made me fall in love with Snape as a character is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. My reason: the relationship exposed between Snape and Draco Malfoy. I know. Draco is a complete ass. However, after giving myself some distance from my original feelings about this character, I have come to discover that my sympathy for Draco has grown. The more I reread the books, the more needy Draco becomes and it is completely obvious that he is an abused child (if not physically, then definitely emotionally).

In book 6, I am always drawn to the conversations between Draco and Snape, and the desperation expressed by both characters--Snape in his mission to prevent certain outcomes (acting in an almost fatherly role both as Head of House and as Draco's sworn protector) and Draco's mission to succeed in spite of how he may feel on the inside. Harry, as a narrator, can only tell us what is happening from a distance in these scenes. He is not capable of feeling sympathy for either character because he is caught up in his own feelings towards them.

But I cannot hate Draco anymore. This has nothing to do with me thinking that Draco redeems himself because he cries. Many complain that Draco's crying in the bathroom is not a moment of redemption. I agree. Draco cannot be redeemed. However, that is the tragedy in his character. In Snape and in Draco, we have two examples of abused and emotionally neglected children. Snape represents one outcome scenario. Through facing inner demons, learning to live with his mistakes (though how successful he is at this is another story), and trying to become a strong individual as an adult, he, though bearing the tragic scars of his youth, still manages to become a hero.

However, Draco is the other outcome. He cannot help himself because he cannot progress. Draco, unlike Snape, is caught up in the cycle of abuse (he is abused and he does abuse others). I would argue that there are moments that indicate he wishes he could be different; however, that is not for this blog entry! In any case, he continues to live in darkness through the end of book 7 because he is the person who will never change.

If these books are truly pleading for tolerance and understanding, as JKR claims that they are, then we must consider Draco in this equation. Additionally, by forcing ourselves to recognize the hell of Draco's life, Snape becomes so much more heroic. He is literally the only person reaching out to Draco, trying to reach him on a level that Draco will accept (although this would be difficult with any 16-year-old). Harry rejects Draco from the first encounter and is the example to us of how not to behave. Perhaps the story of Draco and the story of Snape, and, ultimately, the story of Slytherin House, is to understand the truth behind the situation. Children do not decide to become evil when they are 11-years-old and automatically sorted into Slytherin House. They come to Slytherin with baggage and years of damage attached to them.

This is perhaps the saddest realization for me because, just as members of Snapecast lamented that the "Dumbledore is gay" announcement is a follow-up to realizing a missed opportunity, the portrayal of Slytherins is also a missed opportunity if the books are truly to be about tolerance.

I will update soon...

I have just finished up working at/presenting at a great British literature conference. Everyone had wonderful things to say about the topic concerning the amount of childhood romances in the HP series. However, intentionally or not, Ariadne brought up almost the same topic during one of the interview question answers. She explained that all of the action in terms of character development stops after graduation from Hogwarts. I find this very true and a troubling aspect when applied to Snape. Other than Remus Lupin, who seems to be restraining desires and worries in the final book (something that I find alluring and deeply troubling), Snape is the only other adult character really struggling with life after being a student at Hogwarts.

However, that being said, Snape is trapped in his adolescence as well; and, perhaps, this is what prevents him from ever moving forward in an alternate romantic life. Lupin even seems a bit more adult-like than Snape because of the angst experienced when he marries Tonks. Snape continues to center all of his actions on a relationship with Lily Evans, even to the point of being shocked when he discovers the true nature of Dumbledore. I can't decide if this is naive of Snape or not. However, it ultimately doesn't matter because the betrayal coming from Dumbledore and Snape's reaction to it results from relationships formed in adolescence.

Aside from all of this, I think that the romantic relationships formed in the novel are wrapped up in what the "Snapecasters" say as well as what Ariadne alludes to in her interview. Ultimately, everything has become so much more complicated in a dark way.

Preparations for the end....

I will miss Snapecast so much! It has been such a fun highlight of each month! Severus, of course, along with the rest of us, is trying to figure out how to cope with this loss. Although he pretends to hate the show...we all know he listens every time.

Anyway, I understand about scheduling conflicts. You guys have done so well! The show, due to its quality, is the only one I will listen to on a regular basis.

Still, as Shannon said in the response to the previous blog entry, the Snapefest will continue online in fandom! Also, there are at least three conferences coming up this year. I am registered for Accio and cannot wait! And, of course, there is always "Sev and I" along with other commentary sites.

Now, excuse me while I cry.

Interesting Essay About Snape

An interesting response essay has been posted to The Leaky Cauldron: "Proven Wrong" by RavenPuff. (http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/features/essays/issues)

The essay provides comments from a previous Non-Snape fan. While I don't agree with the analysis of the comment snippet provided from the JKR interview (see earlier post on this blog), I LOVED the ideas the author had about her feelings about Snape after reading Wuthering Heights. As she notes in the essay, Bronte spends and entire book on a love affair while JKR gives readers one chapter to explain Snape's past.

COME ON, JKR. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE tell us more about Severus...preferably in a book. In the meantime, we do have speculation and fan fiction.

Additionally, this post provides an excellent forum to bring up another issue facing Snape fans everywhere. There was a rather cryptic message on the new episode of Snapecast that many listeners have taken to imply that our beloved podcast may end in January. I sincerely hope that this is not true. Or, if it is, that it is only an ending to regularly scheduled programs (though I will need more than four a year). If there is concern that we will not be able to speculate or come up with more material to talk about, please reconsider!!! There is a world of undiscussed topics to consider. And, don't for a minute think that JKR will let the Potterverse slip out of notice. Obviously, we can't trust a word she says (that is not a criticism...I love it!) and she loves stirring the Potter Pot. Just check out her website...crazy things are happening all the time. So, in a final comment: please don't end Snapecast. It is one of the greatest pleasures Snape fans experience each month!!!

Thanks, Snapecast!!!

Snapecast chose my opinion question to be included in this month's episode of "Owl Post"!!!! However, just as an experiment (mainly because I usually only read post-war Snape/Hermione fic), I went to only one site (fanfiction.net) and typed in various searches. For each, I had no filters except in designating Severus Snape as the primary character. I went through all of the possibilities for secondary character matches with Snape as the primary character and these are the results:

Note: These listings are not exclusively (although they are usually) romantic pairings and some listings probably occur more than once, hence the great number of entries. When I do look at fanfiction, I will only be looking at Snape and characters who are over the age of consent in any romantic pairings. I will also be consulting fic sites other than fanfiction.net.

Snape and Moody =17
Snape and Dumbledore = 662
Snape and Alice Longbottom = 1
Snape and Andromeda T. =1
Snape and Angelina J. =4
Snape and Filch = 20 (too funny!)
Snape and Arthur Weasley= 1
Snape and Barty C. There will probably be more than one post about fan fiction and fan art. However, if you have suggestions, leave a comment. (Oh! Especially if you see any fan fics that cover the "Snape as Headmaster of Hogwarts" period. I am looking for those right now...)

Right now, I have a love/hate relationship with fan fiction. Some of it is well written and I really get into it. However, the "one shots" really are not my thing. I guess I like the longer fics. Anyway, more on this later. I just wanted to give you a heads up on this topic.

P.S.: Snapecast offers several excellent links to fan fics that they recommend. Look at the "Podcasts" section and scroll through the various episodes until you see the links highlighted in green. I have not looked at many of the recommended fics yet. I have some favorites (and favorite pairings); however, the ones recommended (that I have seen so far) look really good.

You ask....

How can you love Snape? Oh, let me count the ways. (ha! ha!)

Anyway, my friend, Melissa, can't understand how I can love a fictional character. I use the term "love" in jest, of course...I think. However, I am not alone! The same question has been put to other nutty fangirls the world over. I will speak on my behalf and perhaps on the behalf of a few others. Let me explain...It is so very simple.

The process of falling in love with a "real" person is a fiction in itself. Those we love are really only physically there and the rest is an imagined persona in our minds.

We can never know someone completely, no matter how badly we try or imagine that we do know that person. We can't know all of their true feelings, experiences, realities...hence the reason so many of us are shocked when something goes wrong. God knows that has happened to me enough. As Julia Roberts's character responds in Pretty Woman, after Richard Gere's character states that people don't often surprise him, "Well, you're lucky. Most of them shock the hell out of me."

Chances are, signs of trouble or good tidings were always present, yet we couldn't see them or choose to ignore them. When good events take place, like the first kiss, the first touch, the same thing happens -- both of these things are different for each person involved. We fictionalize it in our minds because that is the nature of humans. We are caught in a limbo of reality and imagination.

Am I really "in love" with Snape? Well, I recognize the humor of it all and laugh at myself. (This posting is only in jest...well, partly...and this might be the part...but I will remain as cryptic as JKR...ha! ha! ha!) Snape, too, is a fiction. However, it is odd that he is thrice removed, yet so many of us love him so. As the Platonic ideal, he is only perfectly known in the one universal thought of "Snape" in the human mind. But how complicated! Each of us imagines a different Snape. However, at least some of the things we know about Snape are pure in the sense that they appear on the physical printed page. Those things cannot change or alter unless JKR decides to revise in a new edition.

Anyway, the point is that it is amazing to me that authors hold such power in their hands. They create and we devour the creation. Maybe we are engaged in a love affair with the author and his or her art. (No, this is not a new argument, but oh so powerful a statement in terms of the feelings of CRAZY fangirls everywhere...myself included, of course).

So, no, my relationship with Snape is not physically real. And, she admits Grindelwald was the man he was in love with during his youth. Here is the entire interview:

http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/2007/10/20/j-k-rowling-at-carnegie-hall-reveals-dumbledore-is-gay-neville-marries-hannah-abbott-and-scores-more.

Also, apparently, there has been a bit of outrage over this news. GET OVER IT PEOPLE. It isn't that big of a shock nor will it affect your child's moral or sexual sensibilities.

OH...and she seemed very amused and excited about the future of fanfiction post the "Dumbledore is gay" announcement. This is too funny!! Can't you just imagine JKR with a cup of tea/coffee, addicted to a particular fanfic, allowing her eyesight to deteriorate as she reads the latest story installment??? This is highly amusing to me. You gotta know that she is addicted to the "Snape/Hermione" (post 18-years-of-age) stories, even if she won't admit it. I wonder which rating she chooses...I mean, you did read the response to the eight-year-old boy as well as the comments about Snape in the previous post on this blog. Hmmm. Very interesting. I think JKR might just have it in her to write something scandalous. (I.E. I don't find the revelation of Dumbledore's sexuality to be that scandalous.)

JKR's Verdict on Snape

This is an excerpt from an online article (source listed below):

But like in the novels themselves, it was the great question of Severus Snape that brought down the house. A wide grin across her face, Rowling said she delighted in the fact that, even after "Deathly Hallows," there was still some speculation as to the true leanings of the erstwhile Potions Master.

"Snape is vindictive, he's cruel. He's not a big man," she insisted. "But he loves. I like him, but I'd also like to slap him hard."

Earlier, Rowling said she was particularly pleased with how Snape's story played out throughout the course of the series, contrasting his character arc with that of Dumbledore.

"Although [Dumbledore] seems to be so benign for six books, he's quite a Machiavellian figure, really. He's been pulling a lot of strings. Harry has been his puppet," she explained. "When Snape says to Dumbledore [toward the end of 'Hallows'], 'We've been protecting [Harry] so he could die at the right moment' — I don't think in book one you would have ever envisioned a moment where your sympathy would be with Snape rather than Dumbledore."

Site for complete article: http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1571977/20071015/index.jhtml

Aren't these quotes interesting? Rowling has repeatedly been infuriatingly cagey about Snape in past remarks, at times declaring him all but evil. I think that we can only take certain comments as truth from our beloved author. And, hey, that is what makes her great! I do agree with her comments about Dumbledore. He manipulated everyone to the very end. And, in my opinion never learned anything in spite of his fervent declarations of redemption and remorse. But, don't get me wrong. I do like some things about Dumbledore.

However, let's dissect, shall we?

Quote:
"Snape is vindictive, he's cruel. He's not a big man," she insisted. "But he loves. I like him, but I'd also like to slap him hard."

Is Snape "vindictive"? Probably, but not in the ways that we might imagine. I think that is a slippery slope to get on and would question what she means by that remark.

Is he "cruel"? Honestly, sometimes he is just brutally honest. God knows he says things to his students that I wish I could say. However, he is cruel in petty ways. He treats Neville horribly (see the Sept. 1, 2006, episode of Snapecast for a whole discussion of Snape as a teacher). However, Harry is a smart-mouthed, disrespectful jerk at times. Hermione, as much as I love her, just won't stop with the comments. (I can identify.) Cruel, yes.

"He's not a big man." Um...physically or metaphorically? Some fan girls would disagree.

"I'd...like to slap him hard."...I bet she would. I think JKR crushes on Snape a little more than she would like to admit. That "wide grin across her face" wasn't for nothing, ladies and gentlemen.

Snape, Lily, and Filling in the Gaps

Lately, I have been giving a lot of thought as to how JKR treats the Snape/Lily/Harry relationship triangle. Ultimately, I find it very sad that (at least in my recollection of the novels) no one relates any information to Harry about his mother. The only comment made: "You have your mother's eyes." Of course, Harry does know one other thing: his mother sacrificed her own life for his; however, as wonderful and plot fulfilling as that evidence/story is, it really tells Harry nothing more than that his mother loved him (as, I suspect, most mothers do) and was willing to die for her child (as most mothers are). The only character that provides access to any other information about Lily Evans/Lily Potter is Snape, whether willingly or unwillingly (i.e. when Harry invades Snape's memory with or without his permission).

I find it interesting that JKR does not allow Harry to learn about the specifics of his mother's personality or history except through information that is filtered through Snape. Motherhood, as noted by countless others, is a strong and many layered theme in the Harry Potter books. Also, why didn't Harry pursue information about his mother within the story line? He is curious about his father and many of James's buddies are all too eager to chime in about their own memories concerning James as a ringleader of teen pranksters; but, isn't it surprising that Harry doesn't seem to be all that curious about Lily? A woman is writing the book (and I won't go into how I deem the HP series to be a bit sexist at times), she is a mother, she speaks frequently about her own relationship with her mother...I just don't know. I realize that teen boys wish to identify with other teen boys; however, the seeker in Harry would want all the knowledge about his family he could get his hands on.

That being said, I also understand why Harry doesn't ask Snape anything else about his mother, even after seeing Lily in the "Snape's Worst Memory" chapter. He hates Snape. However, there doesn't even seem to be a curiosity on Harry's part to probe anyone about why his mother was even hanging around Snape or trying to defend him. Of course, one could argue that Harry only sees his mother in the most simplistic manner. So, of course, she is good and would help anyone in need. However, if the Harry Potter series has taught us nothing else, it has taught readers that no one is what he or she appears to be or that no one is as simplistic as we would like them to be.

In the end, I wish that Harry would have recognized that message about his mother. If he had only realized that maybe Lily had a life before and while she was with James, maybe he would have learned to respect her sacrifice a bit more. If this information was actually realized by Harry, it certainly wasn't portrayed that way in the Deathly Hallows novel. In turn, that makes Harry even more naive than I had realized.

So, what does this have to do with Snape? Well, I have been trying to reconcile my reaction to his sacrifice in Book 7. Many are unhappy with how things turned out. However, in my mind, Snape was trying to provide Harry with information to save his life and ultimately gave Harry many of the missing pieces to his family history concerning Lily. This is an unselfish act and does signal a great change in my beloved Potions Master. For someone like Snape, who holds what he deems most worthy so very close to his heart, protecting it with his life (literally), to give his most precious memories (because, let's face it...that is all he has at this point) to a boy he has despised or tried to despise (yet has the honor and ethics to protect as well), indicates that Snape did experience transformation of the heart on a very profound level.

Unfortunately, Harry, at least as I read him on the page, is still a "dunderhead" at the end of Book 7.

Greetings, All: Misson Statement

Welcome to my new blog! Basically, I am obsessed with Harry Potter's Severus Snape. Like Gina R. Snape from the podcast Snapecast, I take my obsession to a whole new level. Snape is real!!! (well, at least in my imagination!) Anyway, I am a stressed out graduate student who needs a fun little space online to talk about something that doesn't revolve around my program of study. So....here is that space!

I plan to use this blog to post any funny or interesting (at least in my mind) thought I have about my favorite hero. I may look at other Web Sites, podcasts (although Snapecast will always reign supreme!!!), and fandom sites, all the while subjecting everyone to my opinions and thoughts.

While this is my first actual site in the fandom world, I have been lurking around the fandom for quite some time. I have a links section to some of my favorite places. So, although this is a new site, the views expressed here have been forming in my head for a very long time (as many of you already know).

The most important thing to remember: I adore the greasy man everyone loved to hate.
